Solar hot water systems - what to ask before you buy
If you're considering solar hot water, but you're not sure what to ask before you buy, here are some questions to help you make the right decision when it comes to buying a new solar hot water system.

1. Do I need solar hot water? 
Since 30%-60% of the average electricity bill is for hot water, solar hot water can make a significant reduction in this cost.
2. How much will it cost? 
Purchase and Installation The cost the solar hot water setup and its installation is a one-off cost, varying with the size and type of installation - but keep in min that it will reduce the cost of hot water.
Maintenance Once installed, solar hot water units require practically no maintenance. Risks are large hailstones and falling tree branches.

3. What capacity do I need? 
This will usually be determined by:
- how many people live in your dwelling, and
- if water saving shower heads etc are installed (these are still a good idea, to ensure your hot water stays hotter when the sun is absent)
To calculate the size of the solar hot water unit you may need, here's a rough guide (however it is important to discuss this with your supplier to ensure your individual situation is taken into account.
- 1-2 persons -160-200 litres - 2 sq. metre collection area
- 3-4 persons - 300-370 litres - 4 sq. metre collection area
- 5-6 persons - 440 litres - 6 sq. metre collection area
4. What rebates apply? 
Find out what national and state rebates are available. They differ from state to state and various rebates have different expiry dates (that is, the last date to apply).
5. What local council and/or other regulations apply? 
Before you go too far, identify any regulations to which you may be subject.
- Is there a limit to the size of a structure you can put on your roof?
- What rules apply to the construction/installation (e.g. licensed contractor)?
- Do you need to submit the proposed solar hot water installation to your local council for approval?
6. Is there easy access for installation? 
Is there easy access for placing the solar system? Or will placement of the solar hot water unit involve removing a fence, or using a crane?
Add any access costs for placement of the tank to your estimates when comparing solar hot water installation costs.
7. Where will I buy my solar hot water system? 
Choose a reputable supplier. Ask around - neighbours and work colleagues can be a mine of information. Check that the supplier complies with all required legislation/regulations/by-laws, and is a member of a registered organisation.
